Particle Board as Subfloor?

Q. I just installed a new subfloor, planning to use
sheet vinyl
flooring over it. I used particle board, but someone now
told me that was wrong. Is this bad enough to justify redoing
the subfloor with plywood? Could I just put plywood over it?
A: You can apply ¼-inch birch finish grade wood plywood
underlayment on top of the particle board, using long staples
and glue. This really doesn't meet specifications, but it
works as long as the particle board stays COMPLETELY dry.
