Tile around tub or leave access
door?

Q. I am installing tile
flooring in my bathroom and partially up the wall around
my Jacuzzi. I want to tile around the whole tub, but I don't
want to block access to the plumbing that is underneath it.
How can I install the tile but still be able to get to the
plumbing later on?
A: What you need is an access panel, which is simple
to build. To do this, leave half of the 2x frame showing.
Then you gut your backboard to fit. Install the backerboard
over the 2xs, making it solid. Then tile it normally, set
it and caulk it. You want to use a caulk that matches the
color of the grout. If you ever need to remove the panel,
just cut the caulk and take it out. If done correctly you
won't notice it.
