Red Birch for high traffic area

Q. We are trying to pick a hardwood
floor for our kitchen. The cabinets are oak and honey
colored. I want something that doesn't show dents and scratches.
I saw a red birch but I don't know much about birch flooring.
I've heard this is lower than oak on the Janka hardness scale.
Is this a big deal?
A: There is only a 2% difference between red oak and
red birch, but both are durable. Any wood floor is gonna ding
and scratch a little. The finish is what most affects the
durability. Some are more resistant than others. A lot of
pre-finished products have stuff added that increase their
scratch resistance. Without proper care though, any floor
finishes can be damaged.
