Different woods in adjoining rooms?

Added January 16th, 2006

Q. I installed tounge-in-groove hardwood floors in my kitchen and hallways a few years ago, finishing it with polyurethane. Now we are trying to replace the carpet in our living room and want to use wood. I did my bedroom in laminate and I think I would rather do this than the hardwork of hardwood. This flooring will not match the kitchen. Does anyone else have experience with 2 different woods in adjoining rooms?

A: You could put a border in the kitchen area and use a contrasting wood in the living area. The border across the opening identifies where the kitchen starts. There are however prefinished woods you can buy that will save the sanding and finishing of hardwood.
