Filling holes and cracks in
hardwood

Q. I sanded my old maple hardwood
flooring and plan to finish it with satin and urethane.
There are nail holes and gouges that need filling. There are
gaps between boards about 1/8th of an inch wide. I tried to
fill them by mixing sawdust with glue and also with the urethane.
Both ways ended up sunken and required a little sanding. Please
advise.
A: Usually filling in gaps isn't recommended, as the
hardwood flooring expands and contracts. A lot of times the
filler is pushed out of the gap. If you want to do it however,
companies such as Timbermate and Woodwise make filler that
is trowelable. You may need two applications of it to prevent
sinking.
