Cork Flooring Maintenance and protection
Necessary steps for Cork Floor Protection
- Vacuum or sweep as needed to eliminate dirt and grit
that may act like sandpaper and scratch the floor.
- Wipe up any spills immediately.
- Check floor for any signs of wear periodically.
- At entrance doors, use walk-off mats, and you will want
to use mats that are not rubber backed or any other non-ventilated
mats or rugs.
- Wide casters should be on caster wheeled chairs.
- Feet of furniture should have protectors installed.
Residential Maintenance
Vacuum or sweep the area as needed. A good neutral hardwood
floor cleaner is a solution of water and vinegar that you
can damp mop the floor with. Things to keep in mind when cleaning
the floor is…
- When cleaning the floor, never flood the floor or wet
mop the area.
- To apply the urethane sealant, use a lamb's wool applicator.
- Between the coats of urethane sealant, allow at least
2 hours of drying time, before applying a second thin coat.
Commercial Environment Maintenance
- Vacuum or sweep the area as needed, and damp mop using
a hardwood floor polyurethane cleaner (high quality). Never
flood the floor while cleaning or wet mop the area.
- Up to 4-6 times a year, in light traffic areas, protective
coating can be applied in 2 thin layers over the surface
of the cork floor, using a lamb's wool applicator. Apply
the second coat perpendicularly to the first layer. If the
floor becomes dull, it should be buffed with a white pad
at high speed.
- Apply protective coating using a white pad and a high
speed buffer in high traffic areas, as much as once a week.
Cork Floor Fading
Cork should not be exposed to direct sunlight due to it will
fade just like a wood floor. Organic pigments are found in
Cork. Use drapes or other accessories whenever possible to
help protect the floor from excessive sunlight.
Cork Floor Staining
Unfinished Natural Cork Floating Floors and Cork Parquet
Tiles can be stained a color to your liking before a protective
coating is applied. Any high quality commercial oil based
stain can be used on the unfinished floor for on site staining.
If using a water-based stain, for better results, pieces of
the cork should be stained and sealed piece by piece prior
to the installation. For the application process follow the
manufacturer's recommendations.
