How to Maintain Your Concrete Floors
Cleaning and maintenance of concrete floors is quite
simple. Following are some tips and suggestions for keeping
your interior concrete floors looking good as new.
Always follow your concrete installer’s recommendations for
the particular type of finish you have (stamped, etched, painted,
etc.).
- In general, keep dust and dirt swept up on a regular basis. This may require a daily or weekly sweeping depending on the foot traffic in your home.
- Occasional cleaning with water or a mild solution of soap and water is recommended. If scrubbing is necessary, use a soft non-metallic brush.
- If a very deep cleaning is necessary, a stronger soap or ammonia can be used on most floors. Check with your installer if you aren’t sure.
- Area rugs will reduce the wear on high traffic areas. Keep the rugs cleaned on a regular basis as well to keep dirt and grit from getting trapped between the rug and floor.
- Walk-off mats at all exterior entrances will minimize the dirt and grit tracked in from outside. Keep these mats cleaned and maintained as well.
- If your finish has become dull, consult your installer’s instructions for a recommended product for conditioning and/or restoring the shine. Buffing the floor with commercial grade polishing compound or a light sanding with a fine abrasive may be necessary.
- Some concrete floors may require an occasional re-waxing.
Consult your installer for recommended time frames for re-waxing.
As you can see, concrete floors are probably the easiest
to maintain. Follow the above simple tips and suggestions
and you should have great looking concrete floors for
years.
